3 Ways to Prepare Physically for Surfing
There are 3 ways to prepare physically for surfing that will make the first lesson or adventure more successful. First is flexibility, second is upper body, and third is aerobics. A fourth would be core, but that is more extensive.
Flexibility
One of the first issues sedentary people face when learning the surfing pop up is they are too tight in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. This prevents them from getting their front foot sufficiently forward on the surf board.
Warming up before static stretching with a walk, biking or a treadmill is good practice to prevent tearing. Reaching to the floor with the palms and knees bent is a start. Putting one foot in front and reaching the knee with your nose is good. The buttocks can be stretched by lifting one leg up in front and holding onto your toes with a straight leg.
Upper Body
Upper body strength is easily increased with push ups. One of my morning exercises is burpies with a push up. You can add a jump at the end to build plyometric power.
The paddling is the most tiring aspect of surfing. Without swimming, it is difficult to assimilate it, but any type of aerobics improves recovery ability. I cross train for paddling with pulleys to build the triceps. All resistance training for the upper body and core improves surfing strength.
The most impactful resistance training is squats, lunges, dead lifts, and military presses. I do lots of squats and lunges without weights as well. I ride a road bike which helps build the circulatory and respiratory system for greater oxygen uptake and load endurance for the heart.
Aerobics for Heart Strength
As I develop a lower pulse from aerobics, my heart won’t race too high with the introduction of sudden exertion and it has the ability to pump more oxygen filled blood to my muscles. Aerobics that last an hour is great training for all the systems and burns fat in the process.
Use training for surfing as a great process for developing better health and fitness. All exercises make Average Daily Activities in which we participate easier and more pleasurable.
