Surfing Oceanside for Families

Surfing Oceanside for families is a great vacation activity. All ages can surf in the same spot and learn together. No one gets left behind. Sometimes the younger family members are the best surfers.

Surfers learn in shallow water where the foam waves arrive at the shore. There is no need for swimming, but being comfortable in the ocean is important. Kids new to the ocean should start with boogie boarding and just having fun in the waves.

How Families Learn Surfing Together

Surf lessons in Oceanside begin with a dry land portion. Water safety and board handling are emphasized. Students also learn how to avoid pearling and then how to pop up on the surf board in the water.

In the water, lessons begin with the instructor pushing students into the waves. Students learn to paddle hard and do a pop up count to go through the pop up sequence. The objective is to ride to the beach without falling off.

After students have mastered this process, they begin to paddle out through the waves to larger foam waves. Exceptional students in the first lesson may start to ride real waves, but this usually takes a few lessons.

A second objective for students may be to move to smaller surf boards as they perfect their techniques. We start on larger soft top boards so the surf board is not an issue. Once the techniques are mastered, the shorter soft top boards can be better performers.

The whole family can learn in the same spot and progress at different rates. When they practice on days after the lesson, they can do the same. Some members will usually be better than others.

Having fun is the real objective.
