Why Surfers Like the Short Board

When beginning to surf, many beginners were attracted by watching movies and are curious about Why Surfers Like the Short Board. The truth is, there are just as many long board surfers as short boarders. The average age might differ between the two. The age you start surfing makes a difference.

Surfing is about fun. It is a great way to spend a few hours connecting with Mother Nature. Some want nothing more than the fun of riding waves. Some feel it is a proving ground. They want to know what they are capable of. Their test may be to ride big waves, compete, or do the most amazing tricks. There is room for everyone to achieve what they are looking for.

why surfers like the shortboard

The Advantages of the Short Board

The short board demands more physical strength, stamina, and flexibility than the long board. This is one reason why most entrants start young. Kids already have the flexibility and the power to weight ratio that allows easy pop ups. They have the dexterity and quick reactions. People who learn to surf short boards while they are young are able to continue into their later years.

The short board duck dives waves which is an advantage on sand bar beaches where you have to paddle out through waves to get to the break. On reefs, surfers can paddle around the wave break. The short board can ride the steep faces which appear most on sand bar beaches. Long boards need slower forming waves that allow a more gradual drop. Of course on the monster waves, surfers use gunns which are long boards that can handle speed and have the weight to stay on the wave.

Boarders like surfers, snowboarders, and skateboarders thoroughly enjoy tricks and copy each other. They each watch videos of what others are doing in their sport to see if they can do it in their own. Tricks often require deep carving for surfing and the shortboard with narrow rails allows it. All the sports enjoy aerials and it is easier to maneuver a short board in the air than a long board. Tricks require speed to make the carves and a short board can be pumped to greater speed and tricks performed in shorter intervals.

The long boarder manipulates his board by moving his weight forward and back. Their tricks are riding the pocket and walking to the nose. This is not enough adventure for most short boarders. They want to be snapping the tail over the lip, doing 360’s, reverses, and aerials. The pace of shortboarding is faster. The pace of long boarding is definitely more leisurely.

For the young, most do not want to carry anything to the beach other than a short board. It is what their peers use. It is a culture onto itself. They look at their short board with pride because it does take more to ride the shortboard well.
