Why Is Surfing Exhausting?
Surfers often are amazed at Why Surfing is So Exhausting. There are several reasons that new people especially find learning to surf exhausting. Experienced surfers get exhausted by the amount of time they spend in the water and maybe the conditions. New surfers get tired in the learning experience.
Surfing is said by most authorities to be the most physical of sports because it is a full body exercise. It is also said to be one of the most difficult sports to learn which can be stressful for a new student creating a higher than normal anxiety level. Surfing uses muscles not often exercised. It is like intervals which are more tiring than normal paced activity that doesn’t raise the heart beat.
How to Battle Exhaustion in Surfing
The first surf lesson is mentally and physically more exhausting than the second lesson. The stress of learning and the difficulty in learning the techniques create extra physical demands. Surfing is about timing and rhythm. When a student gets the feel, hopefully in the first lesson, everything mentally and physically becomes easier.
I give students a count for catching waves and popping up on the surfboard. The idea is not to think but follow the sequence instructed with the accompanying count. The idea is to keep students from thinking or defaulting to their instincts. A beginners instincts are all wrong.
As a student follows the count and falls into the rhythm, muscle memory begins to activate. Soon the student doesn’t have to think, but his body knows what to do. His actions are well times, use the minimum amount of energy to catch waves and pop up, and riding becomes easy. In the second lesson or water experience, the student will not be utilizing excess energy to execute and will not be struggling. Now he can surf for as long as his physical condition dictates.
This brings up the next phase. Surfers work to get in better physical condition so they can surf longer. Its that simple. Better physical conditioning will also help execute more techniques and ride bigger waves. Better conditioning will also create more courage which is needed for every step of advancement. Surfers who cannot get into the water and professionals who do, use cross training to build conditioning.
The surfer needs strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. He gains these in degrees. Very few people have each in sufficient supply as they progress unless they are in the water often. Some beginners need to lose weight to become more fit and so the burden of lifting their body off the surfboard becomes easier.

Developing good health habits will help your immune system. The main components would be to attain a healthy weight. Eat healthy. Exercise, Get adequate sleep. Mitigate stress. Drink half your body weight in water oz (a 200-pound person drinks 100 oz.) Consider supplements for the nutrients you may not consume in your daily diet.
One of my favorites is the Rishi mushroom. It has been chronicled in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It supports the major systems. It fights viruses, bacteria, allergies, and inflammation.
