Many adults looking for fun activities wonder When Is It Too Late to Learn Surfing. It is never too late if you are in decent physical condition or are willing to get into good physical condition. Many people get inspired late in life to turn a new leaf. Surfing is often something they want to try.
Surfing is physically demanding. Kids, teens, and active adults have very little problem with the physical requirements. Adults that are overweight, sedentary, or just lacking in strength and flexibility will find it more challenging. These adults might have to get into surf shape. The Steps to Learn Surfing
Learning to surf begins with catching a wave, standing up on the surfboard, and riding to the beach in foam waves on high volume soft top boards. This is the best way to learn without getting hurt. Most new students should start in waist deep water and roll over onto the surfboard to catch a foam wave. This is a great way to master fundamentals before paddling out for bigger waves, if that is a goal.
Many surfers are content visiting the beach and riding foam waves. It is great exercise, fun, and a connection to Nature. The basics can be learned in a surf lesson and then the surfer can practice on their own. Many people on vacations take one of my surf packages to get 3 lessons on their one week vacation. They have fun, master the fundamentals, and have a recreation they can enjoy on regular trips or on other vacations.
Get Fit with the Basic Exercises
The elementary exercises for surfing fitness are push ups, squats, and aerobics. These provide upper and lower body strength, flexibility, and stamina. All three are important for surfing basics. Yoga helps flexibility. Surfers need to be flexible in their hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. Stretching is good, but practicing the pop ups on a daily basis is better. Practicing the pop up builds the flexibility and strength specifically for surfing.
Surfing is easier if the body weight is normal as measured by the Body Mass Index calculator utilized by medical and fitness specialists. See your classification at Body Mass Index Calculator. It is a function of height and weight. It classifies underweight, normal, overweight, and obese. Losing weight is life changing and often opens more recreational opportunities.
For someone not in surf shape, it may take 3 weeks to get on track to make conditioning a regular habit. Professional surfers train more out of the water than in the water to stay in surf shape. Everyone can benefit and improve their lifestyle by getting in condition to surf.
