What Are Difficulties for Adults Learning to Surf?
Many adults have surfing on their bucket list and when they visit Oceanside, they know it is a good place to learn What Are the Difficulties for Adults Learning to Surf?
In the dry land lesson, I mention in the process of popping up that flexibility is important. This is a big adult problem. Even yoga classes might not stretch the right muscles. Most adults are in careers requiring a lot of desk time. Sitting tightens up surfing muscles. The first exercise to loosen the important hamstring, buttock, and lower back muscles is squats. Weights not necessary. Most cannot touch their toes or the floor with their palms.
Learning is a Major Issue
Learning a sequence that requires the brain to instruct the body while under stress in the ocean is a big problem. It has been a time since most learned something challenging physical. The brain and body of a 14 year old girl work well together because they are involved in so many activities. They can mimmick anything you show them; adults not so well.
The surfing sequence is steps from catching waves to standing up. They require the surfer to place their hands next to their rib cage and glide for a few seconds after catching the wave. Most surfers have the instinct to throw their hands in front of their shoulders in an already pushed up position. This ends the ride. It pushes the nose under water and one cannot get their feet under their body if they do this. It is like the down dog position in yoga.
Strength and Stamina Have Been Abandoned
Adults can lack strength and stamina. Surfers talk about power to weight ratio. Do you have the strength to lift your weight off the board. It requires upper body, lower body, and core. People who work out in a gym score better in this area. Stamina comes from muscle building and aerobics. Endurance athletes who run or bike score better here than sedentary people.
Being over weight is a problem for surfing. In the process of gaining weight, most have stopped exercising. Now there is the problem of weight and lack of physicality. Surfing is often called the most difficult sport to learn. Wouldn’t it seem being on top of your game would be important? It is difficult not just for the above reasons but because it is more technical than everyone expects. It looks easy and it is if you do it right, but that is the trick.
Getting on the Right Path
The best process for getting fit to surf is losing weight and building strength and stamina. Two books I wrote help in this process, Get Fit to Surf, and The 3 Week Plan. They outline a good process for losing weight, getting surf specific muscles, and preparing the important muscles. I tell people who are totally out of shape that there is no reason for more lessons until they get in shape. 3 weeks is minimum to gain the necessary elements.
