Short Board Surfers Master Maneuvers

surf carves and maneuvers

After learning to catch real waves, short board surfers master maneuvers. The short board maneuvers occur in the pocket of the wave and hopefully surfers have begun practicing them while still on high volume boards.

The first maneuver or carve is the bottom turn into the pocket. This is achieved by turning the eyes and then the upper torso in the direction of the turn. Then the twist torques down the body without leaning into the carve. The surfer places pressure on his toes or heels depending on the direction of the carve. Surfers make a mistake of leaning over rail with whole body on back side carves making them fall off.

After the surfer is in the pocket, the first maneuver on a short board is accelerating or pumping. The surfer pushes the nose of the board up and down the wave with his front foot and lets the nose drop. This increases speed for the next maneuver. Coaches say two or three pumps after each maneuver is enough before the next trick.

The surfer learns the cut-back to reverse direction and find the power of the wave. Then he reverses again with a cut-back to do more maneuvers. The cut-back is achieved by turning the eyes then upper torso down the wave face and placing pressure on the heels or toes until the board carves. The cut-back is used to reverse direction, for style, to stall for a barrel, and to rip the lip when riding up the face after bottom turning onto the face.

After these three maneuvers are learned, surfers might start trying 360’s or floating the top, or aerials. One can spend a lifetime learning and perfecting just a few maneuvers. In the meantime, surfers are learning to improve wave catching and often looking for bigger waves. Some are quite content to stay with the 5′ to 6′ waves and perfect their techniques.

Build Immunity in this Covid Era

The new Omicron variants can often sidestep the anti-bodies in vaccinations. This is when we need to have a strong immunity system. This is when people with underlying conditions like obesity or chronic metabolic disorders like diabetes become vulnerable.

Developing good health habits will help your immune system. The main components would be to attain a healthy weight. Eat healthy. Exercise, Get adequate sleep. Mitigate stress. Drink half your body weight in water oz (a 200-pound person drinks 100 oz.) Consider supplements for the nutrients you may not consume in your daily diet.

One of my favorites is the Rishi mushroom. It has been chronicled in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It supports the major systems. It fights viruses, bacteria, allergies, and inflammation. I get a compilation of 5 reishi mushrooms extracted and combined into one powder. You can get a discount as my client with this link.

This is a short statement that says it all:

  • Reishi: Reishi is arguably the most important and most revered herb used by Asian people throughout history to promote radiant health, longevity and a more centered state of mind. It is known to be among the most protective herbs in the world. Reishi may help improve immunological, neurological, metabolic, hepatic and vascular protection, among other functions.
