Preparing for Surf Lessons

New students preparing for surf lessons can implement a few practices. Most people that are active can learn to surf. Whereas many assess their ability to learn on their thoughts about balance, surfing is more about following the correct techniques.

The Physical Aspects of Surfing

Surfing is a very physically demanding sport. Yet people from 7 to 70 learn at their own pace. The three main aspects of physical preparation are flexibility, upper body strength, and stamina. The three best practices would be stretching, push ups, and aerobics.

Paddling is the main physical exertion. Surfers paddle to catch waves, then paddle back out to waves and then catch another wave. Building arm, back, and chest strength can be enhanced with weights, cables, and once again, pushups.

Surf Lessons Make Process Easier

Three aspects of surf lessons to make learning easier. We start with a high volume board that makes catching waves, popping up, and riding easier. We start in shallow water and the instructor pushes students into waves at the beginning. Beginners only have to paddle to catch waves.

I use a beginner pop up that relies on standing on the back leg for a pop up rather than the advanced pop up that requires upper body and core strength. The pop up process is taught in the Dry Land lesson with students learning a six step sequence that many achieve on the first ride.

Surfing is About Student’s Ability to Learn

How at you at learning new processes? I have found that those who learn easily have an easy time learning to surf. Learning is more than physical abilities. Women seem to have an advantage because they hear everything someone says whereas boys seem to have more filters.

If I told you six words like, paddle, stop, push, back foot, stand up, front foot, could you remember them in order? I have students say them aloud in the water and follow the sequence. Those that say it out loud and follow the sequence are up and surfing.
