Physical Conditioning for Surfing
Physical conditioning for surfing makes learning to surf easier. Almost everyone says surfing is more difficult than they anticipated and more work than they expected. Surfing is very demanding physically.
Surfing tests your learning skills. There are techniques that have to be followed and most people find them a big challenge because they have never done something similar. There are steps in a sequence that make it easy if you can learn them.
Physical Conditioning for Beginners
Three areas of physicality are important. First is flexibility. It is difficult to do a pop up if you can’t touch your toes without bending your knees. Palms on the floor is better. The hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back get tight from other exercises and sitting at a desk. I like dead lifts with minimum weight to loosen up these muscles.
Upper body strength is important for two reasons. The surfer has to push his upper body off the board to begin the pop up. People that are overweight have trouble with this in the water. Doing pushups at home is a good start.
The second upper body test is paddling. Paddling is what tires surfers. This requires shoulders, arms and back. Push ups are good and so are cable puils to work the latts and triceps. Nothing improves paddling like paddling, however. Swimming is also good.
The final important physical trait is stamina. Many out of conditioned adults are huffing and puffing early. Aerobics develop stamina and recovery. Surfing is usually short term paddling. Then you have to recover. Running, biking, treadmill, rowing all condition the body to exert and recover.
Many people in good condition still find surfing challenging because it uses different muscles than their normal exercise. It is also like intervals instead of steady aerobics. Students who surf every week are soon building the muscles and stamina that allow one to surf longer and enjoy it more.
