Physical Conditioning and Surfing
Physical conditioning and surfing go well together. Surfing often is conditioning in itself. Surfing infrequently needs out of water maintenance. Conditioning before learning to surf is helpful for new students.
Surfing is more physical than all students expect. It is the paddling that requires the most effort. Swimmers are pretrained. Triathletes have most of the desired requirements. Gymnastics and yoga deliver the desired flexibility. Aerobics is a final attribute that creates stamina and quick recovery from rapid exertion.
The Surfing Basics
Surfing for beginners starts with paddling to catch waves and then popping up on the surfboard to ride a wave. An hour of paddling to surf is very demanding like getting in a pool and doing short sprints for an hour.
The pop up requires coiling the feet under the body to stand on the board. If a student’s not loose in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back, this becomes difficult. The best single exercises other than stretching and yoga are burpies. Then I like the dead lift motion with or without weights.
Riding the surfboard requires balance but most people have sufficient balance. The main reason people fall off the board after they pop up is that they don’t get into the right surfing posture. The body has to be over the centerline of the board with the hips and shoulders squared to the front and the hands in front of the body.
Beginners can learn by watching videos. The dryland lesson and in water demo on the landing page is a good place to start. New students should practice the correct pop up in their living room every day for a few months until they get the flexibility and muscle memory necessary.
