Learning the Two Basic Surfing Pop Ups
Learning the Two Basic Surfing Pop Ups serves the beginner and then the advancing surfer. The beginners rarely have the upper body strength, core strength, nor agility of the advanced surfer so their pop up is different.
I began surf coaching teaching the advanced pop up to beginners and half couldn’t effectively execute it. I then moved to a beginner pop up which utilizes the strength in the legs rather than upper body and core and most not overweight can get it.
The Beginner Pop Up
The beginner pop up starts the same as the advanced pop up. The beginner paddles to catch the wave and then places his hands in a man’s pushup position. He needs to stop here for a second or two to gather his poise and ensure he has caught the wave, and the board is traveling straight and level.
Then the surfer pushes up. At this point, it is the same as the advanced pop up. The difference is the beginner puts one foot on the board at a time. He places one foot (right or left) on the board flat and under his butt. It is crucial it is flat and requires flexibility many beginners don’t have. The surfer stands up on that toot raising his hands and making room for the other foot to reach the front of the board.
If the surfer doesn’t put his foot flat, he cannot stand up on it in the water and then he puts his front foot on the board while his hands are still in place. This puts his head in front of his feet and he flies off the front of the board. It is important to have the hands in the air when the front foot hits the board and the torso should be upright. The control is being up. Many surfers want to hang on with their hands because they are afraid to stand up.
The Advanced Pop Up
The advanced pop up differs after the stop on the board in the man’s push up position. The surfer can push up and then pop both feet to the board or push up and pop at the same time. The surfer lands both feet on the board and is balanced. Surfers seem to vary on how fast they want to rise into an upright position.
The stance is important. Hips and shoulders should be square to the front. There should not be a trailing arm and therefore shoulder like skateboarders and snowboarders. This trailing arm causes the butt to hang over the rail and places pressure on the heels causing the surfer to fall off backward.
Pop ups can be practiced in the living room to create the surf specific muscles. Pushups, squats and dead lifts all assist the pop up motion.

Drink half your body weight in water oz (a 200-pound person drinks 100 oz.) Consider supplements for the nutrients you may not consume in your daily diet.
