Learning Short Board Maneuvers

Learning Short Board Maneuvers follows learning to ride real waves. Many new surfers will hopefully have learned to ride real waves on a soft top board and then they start progressing to shorter boards. The gradual stepping to short boards should be just 6 inches at a time. By the time the surfer is at 6’10”, he is technically riding short boards.

When riding real waves, the first step is just catching it, bottom turning into the pocket, and driving the board until the wave dies at the corner. After feeling comfortable with this routine, the surfer can add some maneuvers.

The Short Board Maneuvers

The first short board maneuver is the bottom turn. It is used to carve into the pocket after riding down the face of the wave. The surfer turns his eyes toward the direction of travel and then his head, shoulders and upper torso. The surfer places pressure on the toes or heels, whichever is on the side of the turn. The surfer uses the bottom turn also to ride up the face of the wave to escape a falling lip or to begin more maneuvers and tricks.

The next maneuver is the cut-back. This is a reverse in direction. The surfer turns his eyes and upper torso toward the bottom of the wave to make a U turn. His eyes, head, shoulders, and arms lead the turn as he then places pressure on the toes or heels, which ever are on the side of the board closest to the bottom of the wave. These maneuvers differ depending upon which foot is in front.

The most important maneuver is accelerating. This is how the shortboard stays in front of the falling lip and gets the speed to make carves. The surfer moves the nose of the board up and down the face of the wave with his front foot. After a few times, the board has speed and the next trick can be executed. After each maneuver or trick, the surfer accelerates a few times.

With these maneuvers in your arsenal, you can have a great time or progress to more complex tricks.
