How Young Can Kids Learn to Surf
Parents ask how young can kids learn to surf. There is a thrill parents experience when they see their kids riding a surfboard. Parents that surf might take their children in as young as 3 years old. An instructor has difficulty working with kids younger than 5 years old because they have a short attention span. Also, the kids need to be acclimated to the ocean by some boogie boarding or just body surfing.
Some kids take to the water with no fear. Others are greatly intimidated by waves and too afraid to enter and especially on a surfboard. Parents must test their kids to see where they lie in the spectrum. Kids should know how to swim just to get used to having their head under water and knowing that doesn’t mean they are going to drown.
The Fundamentals of Teaching Kids to Surf
The first important step is getting kids comfortable in the water with waves. Even teens and adults have fear of waves and lying down on the surfboard with the waves at their back where they can’t see them. In my dryland portion, I show people what I expect them to do in the water and that I will push them to begin and then turn them loose to catch their own waves.
With the youngest kids who are not going to learn the steps adults learn in the sequence to stand up, I make it real simple. I tell them to paddle three times and then stand up. I show them the posture I expect them to be in at the finish. Some kids get it immediately in the water and some don’t. I push them in very shallow water so even if they fall off they are landing on the bottom and maybe not going under. The real test comes when they turn over and the surfboard is on top of them before they pop up.
Once kids have ridden a few waves and find they aren’t going to drown or get hurt, they warm up to the experience. Most can start catching waves on their own. They are thrilled and like being independent. They are very pleased with themselves. When kids are comfortable riding waves, they can start paddling out through the waves as they are coming in. This is great fun. They are learning more about controlling the surfboard and that they are safe.
Giving children the right experience creates a bond with the ocean that will last a lifetime. Now they will think about the ocean and surfing. They can visit anytime and so many places in the world to enjoy this sport. If they get serious, it is not only a spiritual connection, but one in which they learn the value of being fit.
