How Surfing Compares to Snowboarding and Skateboarding
People who love boards sports often want to try surfing when they visit the beach. They wonder How Surfing Compares to Snowboarding and Skateboarding. They seem similar but there are differences that cause other board sporters to have difficulties.
The major difference snowboarders (SB) and skateboarders (SkB) encounter when learning to surf is the stance on the surfboard. They come in with muscle memory that has them pop up and ride with a shoulder back or a trailing arm. On a surfboard this places the butt over one rail instead of over the middle stringer so that weight is equal on both sides of the surfboard.
Some of the Muscle Memory Problems
Having a butt over one rail instead of over the middle stringer causes the surfboard to tip or carve radically or the surfer to fall off the back. I am a snowboarder so I understand the problem. Many beginners also want to ride in what I call the snowboarder stance and there are a few ways to correct it.
The best way is to focus on the pop up so the shoulder and trailing arm don’t get to the rear. The second way is to pop up so the hand opposite the front foot comes to the front instead of trailing. What also happens is once riding after popping up correctly is they let the arm drop back as they are used to and then they fall off the board.
Getting the Hands in Front is the Key
Both the SB and the SkB have to learn to ride with both hands in front where they can see them. They can make the adjustment of bringing the trailing hand forward after the pop up or more effectively adjusting their hips and shoulder with a three inch turn toward the center after popping up. Beginners riding in the snowboard stance will have a hard time progressing. As he paddles out for bigger foam waves and maybe real waves, the faster waves cause a quicker fall.
The athleticism of skateboarders and snowboarders and their balance is an asset if they can get the stance correct. Once they learn to get the stance or the balance, they enjoy adding the new board sport to their resume and having a sport for the ocean.
