Oceanside Waves Are Great for Beginner Surfers. Good foam waves are a blessing for new surfers. Many people who travel to Oceanside from other states and countries say they don’t see waves like we have in Oceanside.

The beauty of good foam waves is beginners learn easier. It also helps them advance. Surfers who begin with foam waves don’t have to paddle out. Paddling for beginners is tiring and catching real waves at the start is intimidating.

What You Can Do Learning on Foam Waves

The first advantage of foam waves is you can use a soft top surfboard. The soft top is a high-volume board that catches waves easily and paddles easily. Just as important, the soft top board is easier on the pop up and riding. If you can master the basics quickly, you can then paddle out with a good foundation to catch bigger foam waves and then real waves.

I have had beginners in Oceanside Surf Lessons begin in foam waves and advance to real waves in one lesson. Granted, this is rare, but it is possible for those who are fit and learn quickly. The fundamentals begin by standing in shallow water waiting for the foam wave to arrive. When it is close, the surfer rolls over on the board and begins paddling easy. When the wave is about to hit the tail of the board, the surfer paddles hard to get in front of the wave.

Once the surfboard is moving, the surfer can put his hands on the surfboard and execute a pop up. The correct stance on the surfboard is to have feet shoulder width apart, weight equal on front and back legs, and shoulders and hips square to the front with hands in front. This is the same process for catching real waves other than standing in the shallows waiting.

Beginner surfers can practice carving on foam waves. The surfer turns his eyes and then upper torso in the direction of the carve and places a little pressure on the toes or heels on that side of the surfboard. The board will then move slowly. The moves have to be subtle because a board needs speed to carve well. Once the surfer gets to real waves and has speed, the carves are very effective.
