How Many Lessons Does it Take to Learn to Surf?
One of the questions I get asked all the time is, “How many lessons will it take me to learn how to surf?” It’s a great question, but the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all.
A lot depends on your fitness level, comfort in the water, and how quickly you pick up new skills. However, I can give you a general idea of what to expect during your first few surf lessons at our school.
Your First Surf Lesson: Riding Foam Waves
Your surfing journey begins with an introduction to the ocean. In your first lesson, you’ll start with the basics on the beach, learning how to position yourself on the board and the mechanics of paddling.
Then, it’s into the water you go, but we stick close to the shore. You’ll be riding the small, gentle foam waves that break near the beach. This is a great way to get a feel for the board and for standing up in a relatively controlled and safe environment.
It’s all about building confidence and comfort as you catch your first few waves with the help of your instructor.
Second Lesson: Paddling Out Further
In your second lesson, you’re ready to paddle out a bit further to catch bigger foam waves. These waves still aren’t the big ones you see out back, but they’re a little more challenging than your first gentle rides.
This session aims to refine your paddling technique and improve your ability to pop up on the board more quickly and smoothly. You’ll start feeling a bit more of the ocean’s push, giving you a better sense of what surfing feels like.
Third Lesson: Preparing for Real Waves
By the third lesson, you could be ready to start tackling real waves. This is where things get truly exciting! You’ll learn about wave selection—how to spot a good wave and position yourself to catch it.
We’ll also discuss timing and how to paddle into the wave effectively. This lesson often includes more about surf etiquette, understanding the lineup, and how to manage your surfboard in slightly rougher water.
If conditions allow, you might catch your first green wave, which is an exhilarating milestone for any new surfer.
Continuing Your Surf Journey
From there, how many lessons you’ll need depends on how quickly you progress and how comfortable you feel in the water. Some people might feel confident to go out on their own after just a few lessons, while others might want more guided practice to refine their skills and build confidence.
No matter what, the key is to keep practicing. Surfing is like any other skill—the more you do it, the better you’ll get!
Remember, surfing isn’t just about riding waves; it’s about embracing the surf lifestyle and enjoying the ocean. Every lesson is a step forward in your surfing journey, and each wave brings you a little closer to becoming the surfer you dream of being.
