What is Carving and Pumping in Surfing

When I teach Surf Lessons in Oceanside, my students often get to advanced levels in the first lesson. After BeachStorm1st 004they have learned to ride a wave straight in and can catch their own waves, I start moving them to more advanced techniques.

Carving is pretty simple, fun and adds technique to just riding a foam wave straight in. If a student puts toe or heel pressure on the back foot and turns slightly in the direction they want to turn, the board will carve. If you are in front of the wave and turn it, you can drive down the line in front of the foam.

This is basically the same technique used on the outside. The first carve off the face is a bottom turn in which both feet will pressure the rail in the direction you want to carve and with a little rotation of the upper body in the direction of travel, the board will carve. In this case, you will be traveling in the pocket.

Short boarders will pump or accelerate by moving the nose of the board up and down the pocket with their front foot. This increases the speed which enables maneuvers such as ripping the lip or cut backs.

Pumping is unweighting the board to increase the speed by raising and lowering your body. This can be done in the foam riding toward the beach to get in front of the wave or to catch the next section. All boards can benefit from this motion as surfers try to stay with the wave to catch it as it reforms. Then you can do more tricks or drive it one last time.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
