Two Ways Surf Students Catch Foam Waves

By

When I am teaching new students to surf in Oceanside, they have to learn to catch CatchingRealWaveswaves or they can’t practice on their own. Catching waves is not easy and most students I see that haven’t had lessons, struggle with it. If you can’t catch, you can’t ride.

The advanced process used by surfers is to observe where the wave you want is breaking. The line up is made of surfers waiting for the right waves. Depending on the size of the surfer’s board and their skill or preference, they will line up in different spots.

But in any case, the beginner surfer is looking for foam waves after the wave breaks. He paddles toward the right spot and then parallel to where the waves are breaking. When he sees a wave form, he starts moving to get momentum. He paddles toward shore at an angle so he can watch the wave form. At the last minute, he heads straight to the beach, paddling hard to get the wave.

If you don’t paddle for a wave, you stand with the board held in two hands pointing toward the beach and standing close to where the inside wave breaks but still aiming to catch foam. Then the surfer slides on the board so that he is perfectly balanced immediately and begins paddling. When the wave gets close, he paddles hard.

In both cases, you don’t pop up until the board has accelerated. Then you don’t need to be fast, just smooth.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
