The Right Surf Board for Beginner Surfers

When I am teaching surf lessons in Oceanside to new students, they have no idea how DSCF1185technical and precise you have to be to ride a surf board. And that is just part of it. Only experience creates the timing and judgment to catch waves and physical fitness is required to have the stamina to practice.

Why not make the surf board a friend instead of a foe. A high volume surf board with length, width and thickness helps make paddling easier, pop ups easier, catching waves easier, and riding easier. These four essentials for surfing should be mastered in foam waves before moving to real waves.

I use an 8′ soft top board for most surfers and a 9′ for surfers over 200 pounds. Once a surfer feels they have maxed the boards’ capabilities, they should move down 6″ in length at a time and maintain the width and thickness.

If you have the opportunity to go in the water often, you will build up your stamina and have longer sessions. Once you have mastered the essentials and have the stamina for paddling, you might consider moving to shorter boards. But because the above 4 essentials become more difficult each time you move to a lower volume board, you should move slowly.

Dropping the board length 6 inches at a time is a good practice and maintaining the width and thickness helps the transition to shorter boards. You pick up maneuverability without losing too much ease of paddling, wave catching, or stability in riding.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
