Teaching Kids to Surf

When I teach surf lessons in Oceanside, I find everyone has their own way of learning. I try to teach fundamentals, but on the first lesson, not everyone can do what Studentsadvanced surfers can do. And beginners need the same techniques as advanced surfers for popping up on the board. There is only one basic technique from getting prone to standing on the board. (There is a video on my landing page on the pop up)

The youngest kids at 6 or 7 just stand up on the board however they can. This is acceptable. On the first lessons they are not going to have strength to do real pop ups. As kids get older from 9 to 12, they can muster the strength necessary to do a real pop up in the right form.

Teaching them to balance and ride the board in is where they have fun. I push beginner students into the waves. This gives them the right position to stand up. As they get older and their arms are longer, they can start paddling on their own to catch waves. Little ones don’t have the strength necessary to get the board in front of the wave. If they lived near the beach and went often they could eventually move to a smaller board and paddle themselves.

Moving to a smaller board is not a solution until their skills are equal to popping up and riding a smaller board. The smaller boards are incrementally more challenging and moving too soon is a great way to end their enthusiasm.

The most important goal is to help kids get comfortable in the ocean and enjoy the experience. This often means not taking them to far out where they are intimidated by the waves. I keep them in as close as necessary to keep them comfortable. When they are ready to advance, they will say so.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
