Surfing More Waves is How You Improve

In my surf lessons at Oceanside, I stress the importance of getting in the water often to improve surfing stamina, courage, and skills.

When I started surfing,  a local instructor said I would start getting the idea after surfing 1,000 waves. The point is that every wave is a new experience and an opportunity to learn and improve.

I observe surfers in Oceanside looking at the waves from the street above the beach and deciding whether they want to go in or not. I have always found that there is something going on when I get in and it is usually not what I expected when  observing from afar.  I may see waves I have not seen before and have to adapt my take off and decide how I want to ride them.

When I am in the water, I don’t sit on the outside waiting for perfect waves unless it is a very active wave day. I will paddle and patrol. If the waves are not breaking frequently on the outside, I will move to the inside.

Professional surfers spend a few hours in the morning surfing and hours in the afternoon working out and building strength. Why? To improve their time spent in the water.  Most surfers are only getting exercise while in the water, so how are they building their strength, stamina, and wave reading skills?

If surfers only go in when they see waves they like, they may be closing out the opportunity to ride a broader spectrum of waves. If they only ride the outside waves when they can beat the line up to get one, they may be extending the time needed to improve.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
