Surf Lessons for the First 3 Basic Techniques

When I teach Oceanside Surf Lessons, most students are able to surf on the first day. There are a lot of techniques that have to be learned to surf, but constant drilling in an hour BeachBeginClass3.22 003or two usually gets results.

Students don’t expect how difficult it is to stay balanced on the board and keep the nose of the board above the water when catching a wave. Waves come in succession and the student has to roll onto the board properly and start paddling before the wave arrives. They have to be balanced on the board and paddle with their head and chest up until the wave has the board.

Catching the wave properly is not what students intuitively imagine. At the beginning we stand in the water holding the board waiting for the wave’s arrival. Long before the wave arrives, we have to be on the board and paddling easy. Then when the wave arrives, you paddle hard until the board takes off in front of the wave.

I give students a pop up count of four which is a rhythm for each step of going from the prone to standing position. After the board has caught the wave, the student has to continue this count to keep their mind on the pop up. Otherwise, most students lose form.

The three steps are independent. Balance, catching a wave, and popping up each have their own process that have to take place like boosters dropping off a rocket ship. Focus is not easy and the body has to learn what the mind is telling it.

Students who have participated in a lot of sports usually have an advantage in hearing an instruction and being able to translate it to their body.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
