Learning to Surf at Any Age


Most of my students in Oceanside Surf Lessons are between 7 and 70 years old. For the young kids, its a function of not being intimidated by the ocean. For older people, it is a function of how flexible and well conditioned they Timhave remained.

For everyone in between, there is still a physical requirement of stamina, flexibility, upper body and core strength, and not being too over weight. A lot of people used to be athletes and they don’t realize that peak conditioning in any sport begins to fade after 36 hours.

A great primer for learning to surf is the pop up video on my landing page. My regular students are told to do 25 a day. It is the key from going from a prone position to the standing position. With enough reps or times in the water, eventually the motion enters muscle memory. But if you are not going in the water every day at the beginning, you should be doing pop ups in your living room.

I have found that yoga might be the best surf conditioner. It creates flexibility, balance, and strength. The more stretch postures including the buttocks, the more easily it is to do a pop up. Upper body strength, like in push ups, is valuable as well as core strength like planks and crunches.

This is a routine of fitness than any teenager should welcome and perhaps already experiences in their own sports. Its never to early to get kids stretching as I find many cannot touch the ground with their palms without bending their knees. A movement instructor tells me that once people get desk bound their buttocks need to be stretched even more than hamstrings and lower back.

Being flexible in surfing is valuable not only for the pop up, but when you get tossed off the board, you don’t want to be tweaking your back or other muscles. I find stretching helps me in bike riding and even prevents worry about bending down to pick things up in normal daily routines.

Not only is fitness helpful in surfing, but being fit to surf makes you more fit to live.
