Determining Whether You Can Learn to Surf

Most of my students in Oceanside Surf Lessons learn to surf. The few that cannot get up on the board still have fun catching waves and sometimes the lessons are an inspiration to get inBest Surf Pictures 006 better shape.

Any age can learn to surf given students have the right physical conditioning. The most important condition is flexibility. A first test is whether you can put your palms on the floor without bending your knees. A second condition is upper body strength. Can you do a push up? Put it together and do a pop up as demonstrated on the video on the landing page.

Two of my goals in the first lesson are water safety and handling the surf board in the waves. It helps if students are not intimidated by the ocean, which is very intimidating. Students realize right away that the surf board creates a lot of resistance to the power of the water. It might be like handling a sheet of plywood in a windstorm.

Young children need to do some boogey boarding to get used to the wave power and going under water. Surfing beginners fall off their board, go under water, have their boards go over them, and often come up not knowing where they are. I haven’t had anyone hurt, but there is some tumbling and body flexibility keeps away the kinks.

Ultimately, a student’s ability to transfer instructions to the body determine their success. Everything is new and there are lots of techniques to learn. Someone in the constant process of engaging in physical activities learns better than someone who rarely tries new activities. Most students need to correct what they are doing and they must be able to transfer the thought to their bodies.

Some of my best students of have been yoga students, triathletes, board athletes, and swimmers.

Advancing in surfing is slow and requires commitment, courage, and lots of trips to the ocean.
