Becoming Advanced Surfer on Soft Top Boards

By

When I teach surf lessons in Oceanside, we start with an 8′ soft top board. It is a highIMG_7515 (2)cvolume board which students later appreciate as being easy to paddle and easy to ride. That means that in a session as beginner to intermediate, you can stay in the water longer and get more rides. Isn’t that the idea?

When you start advancing you can catch small wave faces and ride them to the beach. Then you can start catching them at angles and riding in the pocket. Then you can catch larger waves and bottom turn to ride the pocket.

At this point you could learn the cut back to get back into the power of the wave. You could also start pumping to ride straight into a new section or pumping (accelerating) in the pocket to out race the lip and get a longer ride.

These boards are fine on 7′ waves. The only limitations are turning up the face and ripping the lip, but my friends have done 360’s on them and ridden the nose in hang 10 style.

When you are strong enough to paddle and stable enough on the pop up, you can start moving to shorter boards 6″ at a time. I often went back to the soft board to learn more maneuvers and get more rides on small days.

Many an expert surfer enjoys the high volume boards so don’t give them up just to look cool. Its cooler if you are a good surfer.

“I’ve read and watched so many on-line tutorials and I’ve gotta say your book is the coolest, most succinct and comprehensive I’ve seen. So good!” A. Parker, OR.
