4 Goals of Surf Lessons

By

When I teach surf lessons in Oceanside most every day, I have 4 goals for new students. The purpose of the goals is to create life long surfing LessonsDoll 007enthusiasts. It is important that what happens on the first day encourages further learning and enthusiasm to practice more or visit surfing each time the student has an opportunity to visit Oceanside or other surf vacation resort.

The first goal is water safety. Handling a surf board in the waves is different from a boogie board. The surf board has some weight and it has fins. It is important that a student knows how to maneuver the resistance of the high volume board in the waves and knows how to protect themselves from being hit by the board.

The second goal is having comfort in the ocean. The ocean is very intimidating in its power. Incoming waves can easily knock you down and when you fall off a surf board you can go under water and come up wondering what happened. Kids especially can be intimidated if they have not had a lot of experience in the ocean. I like to keep everyone close to shore at the beginning and gradually take them to bigger foam waves as they realize they won’t get hurt .

The third goal is to have fun with the experience. Let’s face it, most people are on vacation and want to have fun experiences. Most people are taking pictures so they can share the experience later.  Keeping it fun and finding the fun things to do even if students are not going to be great surfers is important to create the enthusiasm to try again or stay with it. If its not fun, the surfing adventure is over.

The fourth goal is to learn surfing. Even though some people will say that by the 1,ooo th ride, you will understand surfing, most of my athletic students are catching and riding their own waves. If you talk to people who learned on their own, I save students about two months of learning the hard way.  I accelerate the learning by teaching on every single wave. I can correct the mistakes and instill the right techniques and form so that those who can translate what they hear into action are up and riding. This usually creates an enthusiasm that will last a lifetime.

Practice the pop ups in the video on my landing page in your living room. If you like to learn by reading, you can go over all the points I deliver in a lesson from my surf books on the landing page.
