Surf Carving for Beginners is a good way to prepare for the days of advanced surfing. Carving can be learned while riding foam waves straight to the beach. It is the same basics as carving in real waves.

Beginner surfers must have the fundamentals of riding stable on the surfboard before carving will be successful. The pop up puts the surfer into the right stance. The right stance creates a ride that is straight to the beach where the surfer does not have to do any work to stay on the board.

Once riding stable, the surfer can execute a right carve assuming he is riding regular (left foot forward) by first turning his eyes in the direction of the carve. At the same time, the surfer rotates his head and upper torso without leaning into the carve. The torque runs down his body to his feet and he places a little toe pressure on the board. Riding foam waves on a soft top is not ideal for carving because carving loves speed, but the surfer can influence the surfboard.

Carving Right and Left on Longer Rides

The surfer should carve right and then carve left. Once the surfer starts paddling out to catch bigger waves, he will have a longer ride. Then he can alternate carving right and left. The surfer can pump in the wave by lowering and raising his body on the board with gentle actions. This will put the board in front of the foam. The surfer should be able to carve in front of the foam and ride down the line just like riding in the pocket of a real wave.

The proper stance on the surfboard for beginners is feet shoulder width apart. The hips and shoulders have to be squared to the front (parallel to the beach) with the hands in front. Weight is equal on front and back leg. Knees are flexed to allow for absorbing bumps and controlling the board with the feet. This will be the same stance while popping up to ride real waves.
